Office of the Dean of the Faculty

Home

The Dean of the Faculty is responsible for the recruitment, appointment, and promotion of faculty and for the policies and procedures affecting all academic departments and programs, including the graduate programs in art history and development economics. In addition, the Dean is responsible for faculty affairs in the Department of Physical Education, Athletics, and Recreation.

The Dean assists with curricular and faculty development; serves as ex officio member and executive secretary of the Committee on Appointments and Promotions, and as an ex officio member of the Committee on Educational Policy; and, in consultation with the Faculty Steering Committee, makes recommendations on the membership of committees to the President.

The Dean oversees the Center for Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures, the Oakley Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Center for Environmental Studies. The Dean also serves as the senior staff member for the Williams-Exeter Programme at Oxford University and the Williams-Mystic maritime studies program.

The Dean administers the annual budgets of the academic departments and programs and works closely with the Office of the Provost on funding and compensation matters. In addition, concerns about professional conduct of faculty members are the responsibility of the Dean of the Faculty.

The Dean is assisted by an Associate Dean and by the Coordinator of Faculty Affairs. The Associate Dean oversees professional development programs, special curricular initiative projects, the Williams study away programs, visiting scholar programs, and visiting review committees for departments and programs. The Coordinator of Faculty Affairs is responsible for tracking departmental FTE’s, acting as a liaison between the Dean and department chairs, establishing and monitoring budgets, processing immigration applications, administering details of faculty hiring including salary and benefits, assigning office space in Hollander and Schapiro Halls, assisting faculty with funding requests, and maintaining faculty databases.
